Here at Newcastle Dance Academy, all students must enrol in a ballet class to be eligible to participate in our contemporary classes
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.
Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floor work, using gravity to pull them down to the floor, as well as core strength, control and flexibility.
This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.
Pioneers of contemporary dance include Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. These contemporary dancers all believed that dancers should have freedom of movement, allowing their bodies to freely express their innermost feelings.
Here at Newcastle Dance Academy, all students must enrol in a ballet class to be eligible to participate in our contemporary classes. We begin training lyrical from the age of 10 years, moving into contemporary technique by 12 years.
Newcastle Dance Academy is owned by Tracy Caldwell and Roxanne McCourtie.
We purchased a small studio in 1996 with 10 weeks of the year to go, we rented church halls and continued to grow and move around locations until 1999 when we moved to the Hobart Road premises. The June 2007 floods, like many people, caused much devastation to the property.
We managed to battle on, but it was time for new premises. We purchased the Broadmeadow Glass and Aluminium building at the end of 2008 and in 2009 we opened the doors to the 5 studio purpose built complex that is now home to around 200 students.

Dancers in these classes will learn dance movements and routines in both the styles of Contemporary and Lyrical dance. A contemporary or lyrical routine uses organic, expressive and traditional ballet movements and it complements the lyric and rhythmic value of the music.
