This course examines principles of art criticism and uses the critical process in conceptualizing and producing photographic images. It explores photographic theory and its application to interpreting and evaluating photographic media.
Aesthetic and ethical concerns are presented using historical references and perspectives that allow students to place their own work within the context of contemporary critical issues/concerns.
The course examines traditional schools of image making and contemporary thinking and practice as a means to broaden the student's ability in composition, presentation and use of light.
This course is designed for photographic art majors and all art students interested in honing their art criticism and studio skills.

At UTSA Southwest, we have an exceptional facility for teaching traditional and non-traditional imaging. Students receive a solid technical foundation in photography, combined with opportunities to learn innovative techniques, both historical and digital.
Let’s get old school! Learn the basics of analog photography with Natalia Ruberte. We’ll cover everything, from the basics of how to use a film camera, including how to load your film, and where you can get them developed and scanned locally (Dunwoody Photo or The Photo Spot).
Collaboratively, students will explore how to work behind and in front of the lens. Topics include all levels of camera manipulation, composition, perspective and lighting.
This course covers the basics of digital photography and its role in the visual effects and game industries. The fundamentals of color theory, lighting, and composition are central to students’ learning.
We will go over the basics of iPhone photography along with fieldwork.
