This course will cover all the basics of using a digital camera and general photographic concepts. In addition to the technical aspects of digital photography, we will also explore design strategies and learn how to discuss and evaluate photographs through weekly reviews of student-made work as well as perusal of other photographers’ work from throughout the history of the medium.
Weekly classes will generally be a mix of discussions, presentations, and hands-on activities with your camera both inside the classroom and outdoors in the neighborhood around Fleisher. (A field trip, though not included in the class outline, may also be scheduled depending on the progress and interests of the class.)
Students should have consistent access to a camera for the duration of the course. Most styles of cameras are welcome, though to take full advantage of the techniques that will be covered during the course a camera with an interchangeable lens is recommended.
This includes any DSLR and many mirrorless cameras as well. Information about cameras including recommendations will be covered in the first class.
The Lab Fee includes the use of our digital studio, and one digital print.
What You Will Learn:
Fleisher is a source of inspiration, creativity and community. Every year, more than 20,000 people experience the transformative power of art by participating in our classes, tuition-free classes, workshops, exhibitions, and community-based programs.
In this beginning workshop, students will learn all the controls and functions on their digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras, basic camera operation (including f-stop, shutter speed and ISO), fundamental concepts of photography, and how to control the photograph’s final look.
Understanding basic photography camera controls and functions to make more creative decisions. Train your eye to see stronger composition to have your photographs stand out from everyone else’s images.
Classes have been designed to combine hands-on, practical learning with inspirational insights around the broader themes of Photography.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates).
After 20 years of offering Photography workshops, we have never produced one workshop with similar outcome, there is no exact science in how we do things but what remains consistent in our Photography classes are the specific instructions in perfect lighting.
