When the time comes, your teacher will help you decide whether you want to go the acoustic route or the electric drumset route. Both have their advantages.
Instruction in the drums starts with the basics. In the early stages students learn how to hold a pair of drumsticks, how to play drum rolls and basic drum rudiments (rhythm exercises for coordinating the two hands playing together).
Students gain experience playing on a drumset where all four limbs have to work together.
The basics of reading rhythm are introduced through handouts specifically geared to the student’s knowledge and experience.
As students progress they work on more complex rhythmic patterns and undertake a more thorough study of drum rudiments in order to develop greater independence of two hands and two feet.
In the early stages of drum instruction it is not necessary to have a drumset for practicing.
A practice pad is sufficient.
This is a small and inexpensive pad that can sit on a table top, designed to have a similar bounce and feel to a real drum head when it is struck.
A practice pad and a pair of drumsticks is all you need to get started with drum lessons.
As students progress a basic drumset will become necessary. This consists of a snare drum, a bass drum and a hi-hat.
When the time comes, your teacher will help you decide whether you want to go the acoustic route or the electric drumset route. Both have their advantages.
Our Story:
The Manotick School of Music (MSM) opened its doors in 1991 and continues to provide musical instruction to students of all ages and skill levels in the Manotick area. In 2014, the ownership of the school changed hands and MSM students were combined with those of Musical Thought Studios, also located nearby in Manotick.
Today the strengths and talents of both schools operate as Manotick School of Music under the direction of Lisa Bing, founder of Musical Thought.
Our Philosophy:
Our goal at Manotick School of Music is to not only provide high quality music lessons, but to instill the artistic habit in all of our students and their families. Sure, taking music lessons can improve reading and math skills, concentration, self-esteem, and school grades…but there are also more personal reasons for studying music.
Time and again, music has been identified as a universal language because of its ability to speak directly to us without using words. The artistic habit is making room in our lives for these conversations.
Our teachers are all experienced, qualified, dedicated music instructors and professional musicians, each of them passionate about their art and eager to instill in their students a love of music. So come visit us here in Manotick and learn what music can do for you!
Teaching Students to Achieve Their Musical Dreams
Learn how to read drum music correctly, work on counting and timing, and play all styles including rock, pop, country, hip hop, rap - or whatever genre feeds your soul!
The Coopérative des professeurs de musique offer group classes for the whole family. These courses are designed to learn music in a structured way and to allow exchanges between musicians. We believe music makes a lot more sense when shared.
we have created a curriculum for the drums that includes basic technique and theory of military snare drum and jazz styles
Lesson structure is individualized to match the goals of each student. We recognize that the learning styles of students vary considerably, and we make every effort to alter our approach and methods accordingly. Input from parents is always welcome
