Unlike the saxophone or clarinet, the modern flute is reedless – and as an instrument, flutes are among the oldest musical instruments that have been discovered by historians.

Playing a modern flute requires very specific control over your technique in order to produce the characteristic sounds of the instrument. Get in touch to book a lesson and we’ll be able to guide you or your child in learning the flute from your very first notes.

  • Helen Goldsmith is a multi-reed player specialising in clarinet who has recently finished her studies at Leeds College of Music. Helen specialises in classical and contemporary performance and is passionate about community music and music marketing. Helen has experience in the core solo repertoire for clarinet, and her proudest musical moment to date is performing Paul Reade’s Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite live in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall to an audience of 2,000 people. Helen holds the title of Liverpool’s Young Musician of the Year 2012 where she performed Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata at St George’s Hall at The Liverpool Performing Arts Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. She was also recently a finalist in The East Coast Musician of the year competition held in Bridlington performing Milhaud’s Duo Concertante. Helen has also had the privilege to tour with Marc Almond, from the synthpop duo Soft Cell. Helen has vast experience in tutoring woodwind instruments including clarinet, flute and saxophone and has also taught music theory, speech and drama. Helen is experienced in teaching people of all ages and abilities both in school environments and privately.
