Take your photography further on our HNC Photography course and start telling your story with images. Our HNC Photography course, which is the first year of an HND, is your chance to build experience and discover areas of photography you may never have considered.
You will work in our professional studios as well as on location to explore portraiture, still life, landscapes, street photography and forensic photography - think CSI and Police, Camera Action!
Entry
Successful completion of any of the following NC/NQ courses:
NQ Photography
NC Creative Industries – Film & Photography
OR
One Higher or equivalent or relevant National 5 Qualifications and/or other units.
Alternatively, other relevant work or life experience and/or prior learning may be considered making this course suitable if you are changing career.
Please note: You will be required to attend an interview and provide a portfolio of work. For your portfolio, you will need approximately 10-12 images of the standard required to enhance your application. A variety of images would be expected, including portraiture, still life and landscape, etc.
This course requires you to have appropriate camera equipment which can be discussed at interview. Studio equipment will be available for you to use on campus.
Learn
The emphasis of this course is on discovering various photography styles and learning what you love about photography. This will be done through project based work which involves research of other photographers and ends with your own photographic interpretation showing the skills that you have gained. During this course there may be opportunities to work on live projects with real clients.
Large parts of this course will involve you working independently to complete project work and showing that you can manage your workload. Experienced staff will be on hand to support you throughout the year and there will be opportunities to participate in group work, class discussions and critiques.
During your first year with us you will build a portfolio that demonstrates your abilities in a range of photography, inspired by your own interests and favourite photographers. The year will wrap up with an exhibition that will allow the visiting public and potential employers to view your work.

Portraiture and Still Life Studio Photography
Branding and Marketing Photography
Landscapes, Street Photography and Natural History
Post-Production using industry-standard software including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge
Presentation Skills and how to produce professional quality prints
You will learn how to set up professional lighting in a studio using industry-standard equipment and learn how to use specialist equipment for basic Applied (Forensic) photography.
Units are assessed through practical activities, written and integrated assignments.
There will also be several opportunities to enter photographic competitions including the British Institute of Professional Photography Awards. There will be excursions that will allow you to do Natural History, Landscape and Street photography.
Learn how to see the world through the eyes of a child with a career in Early Learning and Childcare. Our courses will help you play an important part in the development of children.
