Course Details

This course is an introduction to Italian for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use with no prior knowledge of Italian required. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing.

This course aims to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in beginners Italian and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.

 

Course outline

Unit 1

  • Greeting people
  • Introducing friends
  • Speaking about place of origin, address, telephone number, and numbers.
  • Present tense: essere, avere, chiamarsi
  • Indefinite articles
  • Adjectives of nationality
  • Preposition di
  • Interrogatives adverbs: come, di dove, quale.

 

Unit 2

  • Exchanging personal information
  • Talking about work, home, age, and numbers.
  • Gender of nouns
  • Definite articles
  • The negative no, non
  • Prepositions a, in
  • Interrogatives: chi, che, dove, quanti
  • Verbs: parlare, lavorare, stare, fare.

 

Unit 3

  • Ordering at bar/restaurant
  • Making a telephone booking
  • Plural of definite articles
  • Gender plurals
  • Adverb bene
  • Adjective buono
  • Interrogatives: che cosa, quail, quante
  • Verbs: prendere, volere, preferire, portare.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • Can demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study of Italian.
