An introduction to foundational Japanese. Emphasis is placed on grammar, syntax, and writing, as well as aural/oral practice. Initially students will learn to read and write the hiragana syllabary followed by the katakana syllabary.

Initially students will learn to read and write the hiragana syllabary followed by the katakana syllabary. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand and formulate basic sentences in speech and writing.
This course is not designed for native speakers of Japanese. Students with a background in Japanese are required to write a placement test before registering in JAPN 1115.
