Course Details

This course is ideal for those wishing to build on their Japanese woodcut skills. The technique is entirely non-toxic using watercolour pigments and not oil based inks to make nuanced prints. It also requires no press so it is easy to set up at home.

Over the six week course we will cover: a contextual traditional and contemporary look at Japanese woodcut, develop advanced cutting using Japanese tools, printing techniques using hanshita and bokashi, and create an edition of prints onto handmade Washi paper

 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and be able to contextualise Japanese Woodcut through research into traditional and contemporary practioners
  • Develop with increasing confidence more advanced cutting techniques
  • Progress through sumi brush line drawing to the traditional process of hanshita transfer to make a print based on ukiyo-e practices
  • Practise different kinds of bokashi to create graduated tones in your print
  • Utilise the different techniques to design and print an edition of prints onto specialist washi paper
