About the Language

Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea. It is spoken by the Korean Diaspora in many countries including People’s Republic of China, Japan and the United States. It is also recognized as one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in China.

Korean was previously written using Chinese characters called Hanja but now Hangul is being used. There is vagueness about the genealogical classification of Korean language. While some consider that it’s a language isolate, some believe it belongs to the Altaic Language Family while others relate it to Japanese Ryukyuan.

Korean Language Proficiency Test (KLPT) includes a variety of evaluation scales such as general communication skill for daily life, language skill for operating jobs and leading a social life, and more specific language functions because KLPT is a tool not to evaluate simple linguistic elements but valuate the communication skills. This test enables examinees to judge the ability to communicate or perform linguistic functions.
