Course Overview
This stepping stone into the carpentry and joinery industry gives you the basic hand and craft skills you will need to progress in your career. Understanding the principles of construction, health and safety, types of building construction and industry operation will help you improve communication with other trades. Learning about measurements, deadlines, standards and working conditions through role play and practice will help you become part of the community.
Course Requirements
4 GCSE’s at Grade 2 or above (including maths and Englihs Language).
What you will Learn
You will be introduced to the essential technical knowledge and practical skills to carry out basic carpentry and joinery tasks required to enter the construction industry.
Assessment
Your assessments are carried out in the workshop. This includes continuous practical assessments, knowledge based assessments for each unit and all the units have a multiple choice end test exam.
Progression
Successful completion of this qualification allows you to progress into employment or on to the following qualifications: Level 2 Site Carpentry or Level 2 Bench Joinery.

In addition, we support the skills needs of the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) through our Academy located within the airport; and we support the skills needs of thousands of employees across the region through our Trade Union Education offer.
Stockport College is also home to our hugely successful University Centre. We offer courses at Higher National Level, Foundation Degree Level and Degree Level; as well as Higher Level Apprenticeships and the new Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs).
Over the course of a long weekend (Friday – Monday), students receive a good grounding in the basics of woodwork. Â
This elemental two day beginners' course is intended for those new to woodworking or with limited experience.
This course is a great introduction to woodworking. The course is for one day, and you will be using hand and power tools to make this box in solid oak and contrasting top. During the day you will learn cutting, planing, and machining techniques.
We provide woodworking machine training for novice learners, experienced operators and supervisors as well as abrasive wheel and portable power tool courses. All backed by respected quality assurance assessors PIABC
