The National Lifeguard Service® award builds on the skills, knowledge and values that the Lifesaving Society teaches in its Pre-Bronze and Bronze Medal awards to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard Service® awards include NL Pool, NL Waterpark, NL Waterfront and NL Surf.
Recognized as the standard measure of lifeguard performance in Canada, National Lifeguard education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard.
The primary role of the National Lifeguard is the prevention of emergency situations and, where this fails, the timely and effective resolution of emergencies. The NL award is designed to prepare lifeguards to fulfil this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics.
The National Lifeguard courses cannot, in theory or practice, prepare candidates for every situation that might occur while working in Canadian aquatic environments and facilities. NL training is designed to teach the principles and develop the basic lifeguarding skills and decision-making processes that will help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies.
The Lifesaving Society is a national, independent, charitable organization that works to prevent drowning and water-related injury through its training programs, Water Smart® public education, aquatic safety management services, drowning research and lifesaving sport.
Annually, over 1,200,000 Canadians participate in our swimming, lifesaving, lifeguard and leadership training programs. As Canada’s lifeguarding expert, the Lifesaving Society sets the standard for aquatic safety and certifies Canada’s National Lifeguards.
Swift Water Rescue Technician is an Emergency Services Training course. Trainees develop an advanced understanding of swift water hazards and rescue techniques from the āhot zoneā (on moving water). This course is aimed at those who may be called on to perform a water-based rescue.
The National Lifeguard course is the last course in the Lifeguard stream required at pools across Canada. This course will ensure that candidates leave with a solid understanding of lifeguard principles, communication techniques and develop solid judgement skills for emergency procedures.
The complex offers a wide range of different programs for fun, stimulating activities, chosen to meet the needs and desires of all age groups.
National Lifeguard is a nationally recognized Lifeguard certification program. National Lifeguard is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country, and one of the only lifeguard certificate recognized by the province of Ontario.
