Music used for lyrical dance is typically emotionally charged and expressive. The musical genres used in lyrical dance include pop, rock, blues, hip-hop, ethnic and world music and different forms of "downtown" contemporary music, such as minimalism. The music of minimalist composers Philip Glass and Steve Reich have often been used by lyrical dance companies.

Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques and is a “cousin” to those styles. Lyrical dancing is normally performed to music with lyrics that inspires movements with strong, expressive emotions.
Routines are based around feeling and emotion and, though technique is crucial, spirit generally tells where the dance will go.
Modern dance was developed in the beginning of the 20th century and this technique based genre is the perfect choice for dancers who require basic technical skills but are intimidated by the formality of the ballet genre.
