To train personnel in the practical skills and job safety knowledge necessary for the operation of mobile cranes and, where required, to provide specific training in both related job safety knowledge and practical skill applications for mobile cranes.

  • The need to train & statutory requirements
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 2, 7 & 8
  • LOLER (The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998)
  • PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998)
  • MHSWR (The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999)
  • The Road Traffic Act 1988 - Where applicable
  • Working at height regulations 2005
  • Introduction to BS7121 (Code of practice for the safe use of cranes)
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment 1992)
  • Principle Components and Mobile Crane Terminology
  • Engineering Principles of Mobile Cranes (Capacities and stability)
  • Lifting gear - Slinging and signaling proceedures
  • Operators safety guide
  • Films: Slinging safety
  • Multi choice theoretical test

Course Contents (Practical)

  • Introduction to the machine (Power Unit and Control Familiarisation)
  • Operating practice of all controls (unladen)
  • Pre-shift checks - refuelling - simple maintenance
  • Safe load indicators (Rated capacities - specifications - adjustments)
  • Use of Outriggers and setting up duties
  • Operating practice all controls (laden)
  • Specific Lifts (Lifting and positioning various loads)
  • Blocked and free on wheels duties
  • Rough terrain and all terrain operations (W/A)
  • Altering jib lengths (Fly jibs & jib extensions)
  • Reeling and altering line pull
  • Travelling on public highways
  • Practical skill ability tests
