Creating garments to your own body measurements requires specialised drafting skills. A pattern is simply a template from which the pieces of a garment are traced or laid on to fabric before being cut out and assembled.
If you think about the infinite number of body shapes and combinations, it’s hardly a surprise that such a small number of people match standard pattern sizes.
You’ll start by creating a pattern block (sometimes called a sloper) which is a basic pattern that you can adapt to create many different styles of clothing - all with your exact measurements for a custom fit.

Our pattern making courses are designed to give you all the experience and skills necessary to create your very own garment designs, without being restricted to pre-made commercial patterns.

Once you understand the fundamentals of pattern fit and ease, where to place darts, what types of seams to use.
It’s fun! Pattern drafting skills will open up a whole new range of sewing possibilities.
Short on time but big on sewing aspiration? We offer a wide range 6-12 hour workshops on specialised sewing and fashion topics. Learn a new skill, brush up on your techniques, or sample our studio and learning environment before committing to a longer course.
Not confident about your machine? Then come and learn how to use it. Eg: altering tensions; using different stitches and feet. Gain the confidence you will need to make a garment. BYO sewing machine with foot control and power cord to class, and all materials.
These classes, instructed by Helena Kinnunen, are an introduction to upholstery sewing during which time students will make or recover their own cushions. It is suitable for beginner to intermediate skill level.
We offer patchwork one on one lessons from our home studio. All you need to do is bring your fabric, and we supply the rest.
You are welcome to bring in your cut garments ready to sew. If you need help reading a pattern & cutting it out we can cover that too. Bring in your own domestic sewing machine to the class and start learning & improving now!
This is a fun quilt to make if you enjoy playing with color. Each leaf can be as individual as you want to create it. Again, this would be a good candidate for those who have a stash that needs using. Some experience necessary.
