  • Teacher's Experience
  • Pianist Dr. Matthew Loudermilk is a co-founder and director of the International Music Academy in Houston, which is revolutionizing the approach to children's music education in Texas. Matthew is a preeminent teacher, arts advocate, speaker and teacher trainer. Together with his wife Katarina Ryndina Loudermilk he is a hands-on director: working with children and adults, training and mentoring young teachers, presenting at the TMTA conferences and performing as duet partner in Texas and abroad. His artistic inspiration is the music of Bach, Beethoven and Liszt, composers whose work offers rich reflections of their thoughts and spiritual revelations. Through thoughtful interpretations executed with stunning virtuosity, Matthew offers his audience an experience that is aesthetic and rich in insight. It is this same insight and technical prowess that has brought Matthew's students such dazzling success. His students have performed in many major concert venues in America and abroad, including Carnegie Hall, and have won numerous prizes at prestigious competitions, such as the state, regional and national Music Teachers of North America (MTNA) Competition, Chopin International Competition, as well as Fidelity Investments FutureStage Competition which garnered a performance with the Houston Symphony, Houston Tuesday Musical Club's Prodigy Competition, Texas State Young Artist Competition, and the Frydryk Chopin Society's Sonatina and Sonata Competition. His duet team represented Texas and the Southwest region at the national MTNA competition for two consecutive years. This exceptional duo also appeared on Houston’s PBS television station and toured China. Ekaterina and Matthew continue to have an active performing career, both as soloists and duo partners. After six years of marriage they formed their piano duo which garnered immediate recognition, receiving First Prize at the Alexander & Buono Competition in 2014. In summer of 2015, they were invited to tour China with their Rachmaninov program. They have done numerous performances on KUHF Radio, (Listen here) and their Schubert Fantasy was featured on Houston’s PBS television station. Matthew started his musical education at the age of five with his mother Mary Loudermilk. By age 15 he was accepted into the studio of Thomas Hecht, professor and Artist-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music. As a high school student at the Cleveland Institute Preparatory program Matthew won numerous competitions, which led to orchestra performances with Lakeland Symphony Orchestra, the Akron Youth Symphony and the Stow Chamber Orchestra. On a full-tuition Trustee’s scholarship, Matthew continued his study at Case Western Reserve University, where he won the Terr Ronis Concerto Competition and the Lymen piano prize for contemporary music. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2002 from Case Western Reserve University, Matthew completed a Master's Degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music where he studied with Jon Kimura Parker. His other principal teachers include Robert Roux, Peter Takacs and Nancy Weems. Matthew won first prize in the Young Texas Artist Competition, first prize in the 2005 San Antonio TMC Piano Competition, and second prize at the 2002 National Career Awards Competition. His performances throughout the United States include appearances at the NFMC national convention in New Orleans, Severance Hall in Cleveland, the Gilmore Festival in Michigan, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and a live performance on WCLV-FM, Cleveland’s classical music station.
