Course Content:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of technology to use and maintain portable power tools
    • The techniques of using different portable power tools are explained. The cost benefits of using portable power tools versus hand tools for similar work functions are explained.
  • Identify and select portable power tools
    • Portable power tools are identified in terms of the work function they were designed to perform. Portable power tools are selected according to site conditions and the task to be performed. Additional implements that could be used to perform the same task are identified in terms of workplace safety requirements. The tools covered in this course include circular saws, table saws, miter saws (compound and standard), nail guns, drills, impact drills, Hammer drills, impact wrenches, angle grinders, jigsaws, reciprocating saws, bandsaws, routers, belt sanders, orbital sanders and air compressors, electric screwdriver and multi-tools.
  • Utilize power hand tools
    • Personal protective equipment is selected according to the work functions to be performed. Personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Consequences of not correctly wearing personal protective equipment are explained in terms of potential injury to self and others. Techniques for using the portable power tools are demonstrated in terms of statutory requirements. Awareness of other workers in the vicinity is demonstrated in terms of statutory requirements. Consequences of unsafe working practice are explained in terms of potential harm to self and others.
  • Maintain portable power tools
    • Portable power tools are cleaned in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. Portable power tools are stored in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. Cutting edges and points are maintained in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. Damaged or broken parts are repaired, replaced or reported in accordance with company procedures.
  • Power lead safety
    • Overload situations are discussed, hazardous environmental conditions, environmental and power ratings (Amps v Wattage explained). Fire hazards caused by covered cords are noted, as are the dangers of power cord sharing between appliances and ‘chaining’ cables together. Inspection criteria, conditions that expose the user the dangers of electrical shocks.
