Sign Language

Sign language training for the deaf is a way of communicating language with the use of gestures, body language and facial expressions. Often people who are not deaf use sign language to communicate with the deaf or the hearing-impaired, to convey thoughts and feelings. Likewise people who are deaf or who have impaired hearing also use sign language to communicate with others.

Within the United Kingdom the most widely used form of sign language is called British Sign Language BSL which includes its own grammatical structure and syntax.

As a language of communication it is not reliant or dependent on the actual spoken verbal language.

Over 160,000 deaf people in the United Kingdom use British sign language as their number one form of communication.

British sign language is a language of the times and includes its own structure of vocabulary and grammar and is displayed through hand movements, face, head and body language.

There is no universally recognised sign language and sign language styles can vary from country to country and is constantly evolving.

Enrolment for this course in the study of sign language is open and ongoing for anyone who wishes to learn British sign language either for personal self-development or as an ideal introduction to further specialist training and study.
