Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. It’s a strong rhythmical dance form that draws on music from many traditions. Tap dance puts an emphasis on the mastery of using the feet as a percussive instrument.
Films and stage show such as ’42nd Street’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’ bring the old-style tap to a new generation. New shows such as ‘Tap Dogs’ and ‘Stomp’ have updated this style making it a very popular class to take!

Good understanding of beats, time signatures and rhythm are only a few things the students will be competent in when progressing through the grades.
As the only dance school in Whangarei with a purpose-built fully furbished dance studio, WADPA has everything located under one roof. Our fully qualified and registered staff teach Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Acrobatic, and Contemporary Dance.
We teach age and developmentally appropriate Ballet, Tap, and Jazz dance technique classes from a syllabus that allows younger students more time for movement exploration while providing advanced students with the tools to become professional dancers.
AMJAZZ Dance Studios is a technical training dance school which offers specialized and structured dance classes, providing each dancer with solid training in both technique and performance.
The Chilton Dance Centre Tap training is based on the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance Tap syllabus.
The American Tap consists of barre work, centre work, and set or teachers’ own choreographed dances.
NZAMD tap syllabus consists of barre work, centre work & dances. It offers the necessary training and progression to become an accomplished tap dancer. Students have the option of sitting exams or medals.
Tap has had many different stages in its evolution; from its roots in African American history and into the silver screen years with Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Gene Kelly, to the Tap Dogs and Boot Men of today.
