Tap Dance is a percussive style that originated in the United States in the 1700’s. Using shoes with metal plates to create sound, students develop coordination, precision, rhythmic skills, and musicality.

Classes culminate in learning choreography as well as practicing improvisation.
In the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, the Mark Morris Dance Center, founded in 2001, is the hub of dance and music education in Brooklyn. The nine-studio building provides affordable classes in multiple genres for people of all ages, levels, with and without disabilities, accompanied by live music.
The studios, a performance space, a Wellness Center, and ancillary spaces are all available to the community and to nonprofit organizations at subsidized rates. MMDG’s Community Education Programs partner with public and private schools and community centers to provide customized classes.
MMDG also offers customized dance workshops for persons with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers. MMDG programs in NYC and worldwide engage nearly 100,000 people annually.
Tap is a historical dance form that emphasizes rhythm, syncopation and musicality of the feet in tap shoes. Combinations can be performed to music with the feet following the beats provided, or without music (a cappella) where the feet generate the musicality on their own.
Students ages 7 and up are invited to move beyond the combination class into a 45-minute tap technique class. This, fun, high energy class will emphasize proper tap progressions, styles, and rhythms. Tap students will perform one routine in the Spring Recital.
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of tap dance. Students will learn tap terminology while working on the embodiment of rhythm, coordination, and musicality. (Suggested attire: comfortable clothing for movement, tap shoes)
Classes are fun and fast-paced and are offered to students ages 5+ in tap. Tap is an excellent way to develop rhythm, coordination, dexterity, and agility that carries over to other dance disciplines, academics, and athletics.
Theater and Rhythm tap classes are offered to tappers of all ages and levels starting at 5 years old. JazzJazz classes explore varieties of dance styles, and start at the age of five.
