  • I believe in the power of observation and that the teacher should learn as much as the student. I have particular ideas about technique and musicality that I like to emphasize but I am not rigid in my approach.” • M.M., Manhattan School of Music • B.M., Peabody Conservatory of Music Born in Curacao, Alejandro Cote began studying the guitar at age twelve, influenced by his mother who also played. He later moved to the United States to attend the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Manhattan School of Music where he studied with David Leisner. Alejandro aims to provide his students with a solid musical and technical foundation from the beginning of their studies. “I believe in the power of observation and that the teacher should learn as much as the student. I have particular ideas about technique and musicality that I like to emphasize but I am not rigid in my approach. Students have different skills. The best teachers are those that can pinpoint what their student’s particular strengths and weaknesses are.” Although classically trained, Alejandro will work with students on classical, folk, or rock music, depending on their preference. Alejandro’s students range in age from four to adult. “With students under six I start by teaching them about the instrument and then gradually introduce different musical and technical skills.” Alejandro works with adult students to create a path of study that matches their musical tastes. “Depending on their skill level, I teach adults what they are interested in learning.” Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart and Schumann are among Alejandro’s favorite composers. He frequently performs as a solo artist and in chamber ensemble but prefers solo playing simply because “the most exciting repertoire for the guitar is written for the instrument alone.” Alejandro cites his teacher David Leisner as one of his major influences although “growing up Andres Segovia was my idol.” In addition to performing and teaching, Alejandro enjoys cooking and reading.
