Woodwork classes are offered by Tom Trimmins Woodwork. I teach furniture-making classes for adults at my professional workshop in Islington, north London.  I also run outdoor woodworking courses in summer.

Description:

An introduction to the skills, materials and tools of furniture making, this course is great for beginners or as a refresher. This three-day course takes place at my professional workshop in London from 10am to 5pm. There are just four students in each class so theres plenty of opportunity to ask me stuff.

Beyond what you will learn, my aim with this course is to draw you in to to the craft of woodworking and how enjoyable it can be.

You'll learn how to cut some traditional woodworking joints, such as a halving joint, mortice and tenon and how to joint boards together by hand. You'll make a trivet (for hot pans), a serving board and a twin tenoned mallet.

We will use a mix of hand-tools, both western and Japanese, such as different kinds of saws, chisels, planes (I have lots of planes you can try out) and a selection of marking tools. I'll also introduce you to some machines and handheld power tools such as the table saw, bandsaw, planer/thicknesser, router, biscuit joiner and disc sander.

You will work with different woods such as white beech, oak, walnut, tulipwood and ash. It's great to get a feel for the different ways that they react to the tools, and the different uses they can be put to.

All the wood you will need is included in the price and all tools are provided - though if you want to pick up some of your own to carry on at home you can order via my tool shop.

If you are keen to learn how to make things out of wood then this is a great place to start before trying one of my project based courses. Even if you've never picked up a chisel before, everything will be explained as you progress and by the end of the course you'll feel confident to continue making with wood.
