The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, or CELTA, is a qualification for proficient English speakers planning to teach English as a foreign language.
The certificate is specifically designed for those with little or no previous teaching experience. Awarded by Cambridge ESOL, CELTA is one of the few internationally recognised English language teaching qualifications.
Basil Paterson’s CELTA course is designed to give new English language teachers the skills and knowledge they need to step into the classroom with confidence. The course consists of 120 hours contact time with over 80 hours individual learning and six hours assessed teaching practice.
Areas of academic specialisation include exam preparation, university entrance preparation and the skills needed to excel in higher education. This includes personal statement composition, application and/or interview techniques.
If you would like to work or study in the UK and English is not your first language, you may need to take an IELTS examination. IELTS is the most widely recognised test of communicative English language ability, and Basil Paterson is the largest centre for this examination in Scotland.
