Dance Ihayami is Scotland’s Indian dance company, dedicated to the contemporisation of Indian dance. Founded in 2003 by Priya Shrikumar, the company is based in Edinburgh and works throughout Scotland and beyond.
The company challenges ideas about Indian classical dance and creates innovative contemporary work, regularly collaborating with different art forms and media. Dance Ihayami’s dance work is rooted in strong classical Indian technique, with an edgy contemporary style.
The company’s vision is to enrich the Scottish national repertoire of dance, and engage people of all ages and backgrounds in Indian classical and contemporary dance as audience, artists and participants.
Kuchipudi is one of India’s classical dance forms. It originated in Andhra Pradesh, in the south of India. A dance-drama performance art, from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, it is known for its quick footwork, dramatic characterization, expressive eye movements and spirited narrative.
The class will usually begin with a simple warm up to get everyone moving. A song will have already been chosen by your instructor and the choreography will be taught in small sections, making it easy for you to remember the steps!
Dance Ihayami teaches Ashtanga inspired Yoga, a style that emphasises the linking of movement and breath (vinyasa), breathing with sound (ujjayi), bandhas (energy locks), and drishti (gazing point).
