Method

The direct method is used in principle. Students learn whole sentences and questions on various practical subjects such as meeting people, shopping, finding your way, visiting the doctor and eating out. Grammar is introduced after some weeks of using this method. The written language is taught, but oral and aural communication is considered to be more important.

With the upper levels more grammar is introduced , but at the same time much of the lesson is used for discussing and debating on various subjects, or on articles from French magazines.

Listening comprehension is considered to be of prime importance. Consequently students listen in class to recorded material and are encouraged to do the same at home. The written and the spoken word are each considered to be important. Therefore there is much repetition and oral communication as well as reading and understanding.

Organisation of classes

Usually an evening or a morning class can be arranged for all levels, including beginners, intermediate and more advanced / fluency practice levels.

The students benefit greatly from being in a class with others as this affords them the opportunity of practice in oral and aural communication, and the ability to share their experience of learning French with others.

Venue

The classes are conducted by myself from my home in Plumstead, Cape Town. I have a room fitted out as a classroom. With limited space and preferring the smaller classes, I have space for no more than 10 students and usually fewer than that number. This results in students having more or less individual attention and the opportunity for each of them to practise French aloud in the class.
