About the Sandton Hindu School

The Sandton Hindu School was established in 2004 with the aim of keeping the language of Gujarati alive amongst the youth.  Over the years, the School has steadily grown in numbers and has expanded its vision, so that it is now a school for all Hindus in South Africa offering tuition in Hindi, Hinduism and Gujarati with the aim of introducing more languages spoken by the Indian diaspora in South Africa.

Situated at the Marlboro Radhe Shyam Mandir, the School is a hub for all religious and cultural festivies in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.  During 2019, the School was able to transition to online learning, and therefore offers tuition to not only residents of Gauteng, but to those beyond its borders as well.

The School is a non-profit organisation and is run by a group of parents who volunteer their time and energy and whom we refer to as the Exco Team.  The fees collected by the School are used primarily to pay the teachers and maintain the physical classrooms, as well as provide learning material for students.

The School currently has 9 educators, who are fondly known as “Baheno” by the pupils and parents alike.  Some of our Baheno have been with the School from its inception and they have embraced the various challenges faced by the School over the years with grace and passion, ensuring that the foundation for learning is never compromised.  The School does not teach Gujarati in the “traditional rote” formula, but rather focuses on learning through play and movement and conversational Gujarati.  Tuition is currently offered from Foundation Phase to Grade 5.

The School operates exclusively on a Saturday afternoon between the hours of 13:00 – 17:00 and yes, this is a limited time period in which to convey the full beauty of our language and culture, which is why one of the philosophies of the School is that our language and culture is alive and therefore must be spoken and lived both at School and at home.  As a School we do not send children home with “homework” but rather encourage “home play”, which if practiced correctly, improves everyone’s language skills.

Our Values

The Sandton Hindu School is also acutely aware of its role in today’s fast paced society and so educating the future generation on where they have come from, and how the Indian way of life is grounding, nuturing, supportive and filled with love and joy will help to provide a foundation that builds self-knowledge and self-esteem.

We require parents to support children on this journey of learning and play an active role in their education both at School and at home.  It is not possible for our children to reap all the benefits of our rich culture if they do not see us living it.  Learning needs to be fun, but sincere and has to be reinforced through play at home.
