The aim of the Sawdust Academy is to provide a relaxed and friendly environment for those who wish to learn (or re-learn) woodworking hand skills. The classes are held in a well equiped workshop in the historic surroundings of Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth. Generally there will be a maximum of four students on each course. Essential PPE, materials and the use of tools will be provided and are included in the price.

Courses are being offered include:
• a one day course to make a three legged stool (suitable for all levels);
• a course to learn basic joinery techniques, initially one day (suitable for beginners)
• a one day tool sharpening experience
• introduction to using a router
• a three day course to produce a paddle or an oar (suitable for all levels)

More courses will be added over time and the basic joinery course will form the initial element of a modular programme which will build into more comprehensive training.

The courses are run by me, Jon Carver. I have been teaching woodwork for 14 years in schools and Further Education establishments including IBTCPortsmouth, I am a passionate advocate for the use of hand tools and the all round benefits of ‘making things’.
