The classes are held in a well equiped workshop in the historic surroundings of Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth. Generally there will be a maximum of four students on each course. Essential PPE, materials and the use of tools will be provided and are included in the price.
Courses are being offered include:
• a one day course to make a three legged stool (suitable for all levels);
• a course to learn basic joinery techniques, initially one day (suitable for beginners)
• a one day tool sharpening experience
• introduction to using a router
• a three day course to produce a paddle or an oar (suitable for all levels)
More courses will be added over time and the basic joinery course will form the initial element of a modular programme which will build into more comprehensive training.
The courses are run by me, Jon Carver. I have been teaching woodwork for 14 years in schools and Further Education establishments including IBTCPortsmouth, I am a passionate advocate for the use of hand tools and the all round benefits of ‘making things’.
The course covers eight HN Units at Advanced Level Carpentry and Joinery. Your knowledge and experience will be enhanced in a wide variety of construction, woodworking principles and techniques.
Fancy learning new skills, developing existing ones or discovering a talent you never knew you had? Perhaps you’re fed up with paying to get people to do the simplest jobs or you just want to gain confidence to take on these jobs yourself.
Level 1 introduces the learner to carpentry and joinery skills. It allows students to learn, develop and practise their practical ability and construction knowledge with a mixture of theory and practical sessions which develops the learner at their own pace.
This course is more physically demanding than carving a spoon, so would serve as a natural progression for those who have done some carving before. However keen first timers are always welcome!
The course is designed to help you progress your training within a practical environment and includes theory assignments with two online exams. You will be fully supported by our expert tutors, who will expect you to be self-motivated and keen to achieve,
