This is a one day workshop course making 3-legged stool from hardwood, some elements of which have been preformed. You will spend the day making the stool, using materials and hand tools provided, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The completed stools will be yours to take home at the end of the day. This course is suitable for all abilities of woodworker, but a ‘can do’ attitude is desirable.
The aim of the Sawdust Academy is to provide a relaxed and friendly environment for those who wish to learn (or re-learn) woodworking hand skills. The classes are held in a well equiped workshop in the historic surroundings of Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth. Generally there will be a maximum of four students on each course. Essential PPE, materials and the use of tools will be provided and are included in the price.
Courses are being offered include:
• a one day course to make a three legged stool (suitable for all levels);
• a course to learn basic joinery techniques, initially one day (suitable for beginners)
• a one day tool sharpening experience
• introduction to using a router
• a three day course to produce a paddle or an oar (suitable for all levels)
More courses will be added over time and the basic joinery course will form the initial element of a modular programme which will build into more comprehensive training.
The courses are run by me, Jon Carver. I have been teaching woodwork for 14 years in schools and Further Education establishments including IBTCPortsmouth, I am a passionate advocate for the use of hand tools and the all round benefits of ‘making things’.
This 10 day intensive carpentry and joinery course is ideal if you are wanting to start a career in carpentry & joinery and eventually move on to gain your NVQ level 2 in Site Carpentry. No previous experience in carpentry is necessary.
You do not need any prior experience to come on this course. There is a progression from one joint to the next, and some basic skills are repeated in later joints. You do not have to attend every session, but it is recommended that you do in order to develop and build upon your skills.
This course offers an excellent introduction to woodworking techniques, starting from the basics and progressing towards constructing your own woodwork projects.
This course is a great introduction to woodworking. The course is for one day, and you will be using hand and power tools to make this box in solid oak and contrasting top. During the day you will learn cutting, planing, and machining techniques.
The course covers the correct use of tools, gives students the chance to learn and improve their skills, to create basic joints and methods, suitable for various tasks.
