Safety engineering is an existing, niche engineering discipline, that focuses on ”engineered systems”, from a safety point of view. Safety engineering is linked to industrial engineering, systems engineering and safety analysis. Safety engineering is well matured in other industries such as petro-chemical, aviation and nuclear.
With the strengthening of the mining industries’ focus on the importance of hazards and controls, control focused risk management is becoming a practice that is more widely applied. It is within this context that the importance of safety engineering will add value.
Mines are complex socio technical systems – therefore mines should be “engineered systems”. Consequently, safety engineering has to be a key focus, for mines in the future.
At SECDI we foresee a future where all workers in industrial companies have had the opportunity to work and earn a living without having to pay any penalty in terms of injury or death.
We see all relevant employees being competent in all or some aspects of safety engineering.
All our efforts and energy are focused until our vision is realised at one company, then 10, then a 100 companies locally and later internationally.
This comprehensive program takes participants on a journey to either be able to get Traffic Management established at their operations or to become practitioners of Traffic Management, being it as implementers, compliance -, hazard -, or safety officers.
