Founded in Dulwich, SE21 as Grafton Dance Academy in 2001. In 2009 we moved to the former Royal Mail Sorting Office in the centre of Herne Hill, SE24 and were renamed South London Dance School.
We are delighted to have three professional standard dance studios of our own, each with sprung floors, mirrors and ballet barres. There are no other dance studios in this area with comparable facilities.
We now have over 750 students of all ages who participate on a weekly basis in the following classes:
We have an excellent reputation for providing outstanding dance classes for all ages whether for a hobby or in preparation for a career in dance.
All classes at South London Dance School are taught by inspiring and experienced dance teachers & performers. Our teachers consider each child individually; being aware of their physical progress and cognitive, emotional & social development.
Our classes promote confidence through achievement, develop skills for life such as self discipline & persistence, and provide an understanding of the importance of physical activity throughout life.
The teacher adapts the routines to suit individuals so this class is suitable for all levels (except professional level).
These skills are very useful for any children considering a career in the performing arts where versatility is the key to success.
Our contemporary classes increase physical understanding and awareness whilst developing better range of movement, using the idea of weight and gravity in travelling/swing sequences and the important skill of moving in and out of the floor in a seemingly effortless way.
Children from around 7 years with experience in tap dancing, and complete beginners aged 8 and 9 years, can join our energetic and funky Primary tap classes.
At around age 7 or 8, boys move from Junior Funky Moves into Boys Street (I) and Grade 1 Modern to further improve their dance skills and to start learning basic dance technique. It is compulsory to learn both modern and street together.
