Though differing techniques have slight variations in placement and vocabulary, they all share a focus on technical placement, posture, fluidity and momentum. Ballet is a foundation for contemporary dance.
Ballet for adults is relaxing, fun, and is a stimulating alternative to the gym. Plus it’s excellent for the mind!
Leading community dance since 1978, Canberra Dance Theatre is where the professional joins with the community for classes and performance.
Canberra Dance Theatre (CDT) has a history of connecting professional dance art with a community dance. It grew out of the National University Dance Ensemble (NUDE), established by Graham Farquhar in 1972, which in 1977 was under the leadership of Diana Shohet, Lorna Marshall and Graham Farquhar.
In 1978 a new organization was created, Canberra Dance Ensemble, with Stephanie Burridge joining the artistic team. With the departure of Diana and Lorna later that year, Stephanie took on the leadership role, being named the first Artistic Director. CDE was incorporated in 1981, and in 1989 the name was changed to Canberra Dance Theatre to serve a wider and more theatrical vision.
Since the beginning, CDT has brought together significant Australian dancers, choreographers, musicians and designers, including Dr Stephanie Burridge, Dr Elizabeth Cameron Dalman OAM, Kai Tai Chan, Julia Cotton, Patrick Harding-Irmer, Anca Frankenhauser, Beth Shelton, Anna Smith, Dr Cheryl Stock OAM, Andris Toppe, Wendy Wallace, Bernadette Walong, Graeme Watson, Tammi Gissell, Sue Healey and Amalia Horden.
Classical Ballet students from Grade 1 and above must attend 2 Ballet classes per week. Exams are also available to students from 6yrs.
We teach the ATOD (Australian Teachers of Dancing) Ballet syllabus and complete ATOD examinations which can lead to world recognised professional certificates and diplomas in teaching and dance performance. Ballet builds strength, discipline and grace.
Progressing Ballet Technique is a body strengthening programme focusing on alignment, weight placement and core strength. These exercises help students engage the muscles responsible for turnout and is a great programme for improving ballet technique and preventing injuries.
The class is focused on developing foot and ankle strength and flexibility. Students are welcome to take this class in soft ballet shoes to focus on developing their strength and technique.
Each class will start at the barre’ and then move into the centre. Ask any professional Jazz/Contemporary/Hip Hop dancer and they will advise to take Classical Ballet.
