Then we put those skills into action, dancing the moves in a mini-choreography to a new song each week to challenge ourselves and reinforce what we’ve practiced. Then we cool-down with some stretching.
The term "belly dance" is a westernized name that originally referred to traditional Middle Eastern dancing, such as the Egyptian ghawazi dance during the 19th century, and Raqs Sharqi, an Arabic dance of the 20th century.
Along with the above, today, there are many additional styles of Belly Dancing, such as: Cabaret, ATS/ITS, Tribal-fusion, Egyptian and more.
While belly dancing is often thought of as very showy in style and costuming, the basic dance requires the disciplined skill of “isolations” - diving deep into different body parts separately and learning to isolate movements from the rest of the body – by activating smaller muscles.
Belly dancing is NOT only for women. Learning how to synchronize movements of different body parts smoothly and with control can help any dancer add technique and style to a broad range of other dances as well.
