The cello is the second-largest bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra; the double bass being the largest. The cello is tuned to a much lower register than the violin or viola (one octave below the viola).
An important factor in starting cello lessons at a very young age is finding a small enough instrument. The smallest common cello size is typically 1/8, which would typically be suitable for a 4-5 year old. Most adults will use a full size cello.
