This course is an introduction to the sound structures of human language and the principles of phonological analysis.
Topics to be covered include: articulatory phonetics, phonetic transcription, English consonants and vowels, cross-linguistic phonetics, suprasegmentals; phonological processes, alternations, phonological rules, rule ordering, and syllable structure.
Emphasis will be on practical work with data from a wide range of languages. Careful analysis and clear written expression are key components of the course evaluation.
