Traditionally an extension of ballet, jazz used to be known as “modern ballet”. It carries a lot of the same techniques as ballet, but is taught to modern music with a greater focus on self expression and inner groove.
The NZAMD syllabus follows barre techniques, floor, flexibility, combinations/dances and performance work. It covers lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, jazz funk and pure jazz.
While there is no set uniform for our classes, students must wear clothing they can move easily in and where the teacher can correct body form - tights and t-shirts/singlets are best. Jazz shoes are required for students sitting exams.
Dunedin Dance Academy provides a fun, friendly learning environment, encouraging development in our students both inside and outside of classes. We believe in the importance of any style of dancing and the benefit it provides.
While not every student is on a path to a career on stage, every student will learn techniques that can be applied in their every day lives: self confidence, posture, coordination, goal setting, diligence, practice, flexibility, team work and friendship are just some of the positive attributes dancing provides.
The class offers students from 9 years and above the opportunity to learn choreography and teach their own material.
This class is the perfect blend of dance and acting. We place a large emphasis on stage performance and character work.
Our classes focus on developing a strong Jazz technique where students are expected to have a basic knowledge of dance and a willingness to learn in a low-pressure environment. We do not at this stage study an exam syllabus.
The NZAMD jazz syllabus is designed with comprehensive warm ups, stretches, floor work, progressions from corners with turns, kicks and jumps and fun combinations. Students have the option of sitting exams or medals.
Teachers will use their knowledge and technique to create exciting and dynamic combinations to really push the students.
