To ensure the safest, most healthful and environmentally responsible learning and work environment of any institution of higher learning.
Vision
As the state’s flagship university, we have an unwavering emphasis on safety where all students, faculty, and staff are safety leaders.
We accomplish this by empowering and sustaining an employee & student-centric approach to taking risks safely and infusing an organic safety culture permanently into the organization.
Mission
The EHS program is designed to create a healthful and safe atmosphere for study, research, service and employment, and to promote good health and safety practices. Our commitment to the health and safety of our employees, contractors, students, and community is uncompromising.
Our training programs require a periodic refresher – generally on an annual basis. You must complete the requirements for the refresher training so you will remain authorized to use or work around ionizing radiation.  Some of our training programs are completed online.
All hazardous chemical users should take at least once. If they generate or handle hazardous waste, then they must repeat annually. If the researcher is a non-chemical user, they do not have to take this course.
Training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction and practical training. The course in Kate can serve as formal instruction. Evaluation consists of machine familiarization and successful demonstration of the operator’s performance in the workplace.
This training program aims to help participants develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to a medical emergency. Environmental Health & Safety established an American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) CPR/AED/First Aid Training Center at UTK.
