Contemporary dance is a genre of dance that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe.
Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical ballet, modern, and jazz, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. Contemporary dance ranges from involves large, full-bodied movements to incorporating floor work, to encouraging improvisation and movement exploration.
Modern dance, the predecessor to contemporary dance, typically refers to the codified techniques of Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Lester Horton, Merce Cunningham. Modern is often considered to be a “rebellion” to the more formal dance forms like classical ballet.

Our contemporary dance classes are designed to improve technique, flexibility, stamina and artistry. Proper technique will be used as a departure point from which students will take risks and explore the freedom found within contemporary movement.
