Classes start with a simple and effective warm-up to build strength and to stimulate core connections and body awareness. The warm up is followed by phrase work focusing on directional and weight changes, rhythm, and Laban Fundamentals (i.e. time, space, effort, etc.)

Elizabeth Chayer opened American Dance Institute in Anchorage, Alaska in 1986 as an outreach program that taught dance in day care centers, preschools and community centers. She, and husband Steve, moved to
Seattle in 1989 and Elizabeth started American Dance Institute Seattle that same year. For three years she managed both locations before focusing all efforts on her fast-growing Seattle operation.
Contemporary, similar to lyrical and jazz, is very versatile and can be danced to almost any style of music and paired with other forms of dance to create new types of movement.
Contemporary Dance Classes are offered by Portland Dance Center
Grounded movement focusing on the contraction and release of the center of the body, and the body's reaction to such movements. Expressive choreography and movement executed with an emphasis on technique. Warm-up, across the floor and combinations/ choreography are included.
Contemporary Floor Work begins and ends on the floor. This class starts with a warm-up on the ground consisting of basic techniques like head-tail connection and spinal initiation. Class will develop into a series of rolling floor combinations to warm up the spine and hip flexors.
A combination of Horton, Graham, Jazz and Ballet with a fusion of ethnic dance technique. It's a passionate and emotional dance style that uses motion to interpret music. The choreography attempts to show the meaning of the lyrics of the music.
