Our patterns of behaviour are fairly deep seated so becoming a very assertive person in adult life is difficult if you haven’t had much practice. That’s why we need to start with small steps. And of course one size does not fit all.

Sometimes when we communicate with others there is a mismatch between what we mean and how it is understood. 

As managers part of our role is to uphold the  values of  our organisation, and  ensure that people are able to bring their whole selves to the workplace. The organisation needs to feel inclusive to all aspects of difference beyond the aspects protected by law.

It’s possible to plan a project using a complex project management system, or the back of an envelope. It’s a case of finding the most appropriate method for your project.

Dealing with tricky performance issues can fill people with dread and it can sometimes be very difficult for managers to find a way to motivate their staff. Meanwhile, appraisals are often seen as nothing more than a tick box exercise.
