While studying for a masters in Latin American studies at her university in Japan, Kyoko started working part time at a restaurant as a chef. After that, she decided that cooking was what she wanted to do.
Kyoko was born and raised in Shizuoka, Japan. She has worked as a chef in multiple restaurants in Tokyo, Japan, including "Hide" in Nishiazabu. She also worked as a cooking teacher at Japan's most famous cooking school for many years before moving to San Francisco at the end of 2008.
