Ruth Jevarian, a professional ballet and Armenian folk dancer, opened Star Dance Studio in 1950. The studio was located briefly in the Haight Ashbury district before it was moved to the Inner Sunset.
Ruth’s students loved her — she was talented, creative and taught all forms of dance, including ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics plus Armenian and other types of folk dancing.
Her students performed around the city at special events, hospitals and senior centers, sharing the joy of dance with their audiences. She retired in 1974 and turned the studio over to her daughter, Micky Powell, the current school director.
Micky has managed the studio for the past 40+ years, and the school has flourished under her direction. Her daughter, Julie, taught at the studio for many decades and remains involved in helping the school thrive.
For 70 years, Star Dance Studio has brought joy to thousands of children and adults. The lovely studio at 300 Moraga Street is dedicated to the memory of Ruth Jevarian.
Conditioning Classes are offered by Dance Studio 111 for all ages. Apart from honing their dancing skills, we also instill good character traits in our dancers. Our teachers inspire students, teaching them life skills they can carry off the stage.
This sister class to Tease & Tone is perfect for anyone looking to create additional mobility and flexibility. Creating elasticity in your muscles not only helps improve the lines of the body for dance, it also keeps your body healthy and helps reduce the risk of injury.
This active and deep stretch class is excellent for gaining flexibility and body alignment. Throughout a series of interlacing exercises, students will focus on lengthening the hip flexors, spine, and hamstrings so as to develop healthy body awareness.
Step Routines designed to tone and strengthen! Developed as a way to get a high intensity, yet low impact workout – this class will improve your coordination with simple choreographed routines to happy music that will make the time fly bye!Â
Legs and Feet Class work on flexibility and strength. Students will be working to heighten their extensions as well as lengthen their lines through the feet. The class is structured with a stretching warm-up which leads into the various center and across the floor exercises.
