The clarinet was developed from a baroque instrument called the chalumeau around the 18th century. The sound range of a clarinet is huge, covering both high and low pitches.

The oldest flute discovered was made from a fragment of a juvenile cave bear around 43,000 years ago. Now made from silver or gold, it is about 2 feet in length and is one of the highest wind instruments.

The saxophone is one of the newest orchestral instruments, developed in 1846 by Mr Adolphe Sax. It is made of brass and is popular in jazz and military bands.
